What are The Types of Crane Inspections?

Crane is one of the most essential machines used in several industries. It is fitted with chains, hoist rope, and sheaves for lifting and moving objects one place to another. Crane requires proper maintenance. It is generally maintained and inspected by the professional crane inspection services in Brisbane. Let’s take a closer look at different types of crane inspection.

Initial inspection

The initial inspection is a part of visual inspection which is necessary after installing a new hoist or crane. This inspection is also essential for any equipment or part which is reinstalled in a crane after repair or modification. The initial inspection helps to determine any fault or damage during installation. Experts or inspectors check every part of the crane including nuts and bolts. Initial inspection allows considering that the crane is ready to use.

Functional inspection

The functional inspection is performed to check the functionality of a crane. Before starting any operation, it is essential to test the functionality. This type of inspection is mostly conducted daily or monthly basis. The functional inspection helps to detect the following areas.

  • The operating mechanism of a crane.
  • Leakage or deterioration in tanks, drain pumps, valves and lines of a hydraulic crane.
  • Hoist chains and end connections for inspecting the signs of excessive wear and tear, twist, and high stretch.
  • Crane hooks for finding any crack.

Functional inspection requires a proper inspection record. In this record book, serial number, the inspector’s signature, inspection date are clearly mentioned.

Frequent inspection

The frequent inspection generally includes every aspect of the functional test. However, frequent inspection mainly focuses on wire rope, hoist brake, and load chain of a crane. The latch and hook are also inspected by this way. Any kind of abnormal sound, wear and tear are easily found by frequent inspection. Inspectors perform this test depending upon the usage of a crane. Frequent inspection is conducted daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Periodic inspection

Periodic inspection is quite similar to the frequent inspection. This means, it also depends upon the usage of a crane and it can be conducted daily weekly or monthly basis. Periodic Inspection is generally used for checking the following areas.

  • Corroded, cracked or deformed members
  • Worn or cracked drums and sheaves
  • Loose rivets or bots
  • Cracked distorted or worn out parts like bearings, gears, rollers, pings, clamping and locking devices, etc.
  • Faulty brake components, ratchets, pawls and linings

So, these are the 4 major types of crane inspection. Professional crane inspectors specialise in all these ways. They can easily find out the damages, defects and faults of a crane by their advance tools and techniques.
